Instructional Design: Understanding Learning Styles

Needs Assessment

Learning Style, an underlying principle of adult learning, is the different ways individuals take in and process learning. Learning styles evolve when an individual approaches learning in a similar manner every time he or she learns something new.
Understanding your learning style can help you approach all types of learning experiences in a way that feels comfortable. It also allows you to adapt learning that is presented to you so that it more closely resembles your preferred style (Bogod, 2004). This training session was developed to explore the concept of learning styles and their effect on the individual.

Instructional Goal

To help participants identify their preferred learning styles so they can continue to strengthen these styles as well as become more proficient at using their least preferred styles:

             1. Identify learning style preferences
             2. Recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each learning style
             3. Understand the importance of using variety of teaching techniques to address different learning styles

Performance-Based Objectives

            1. Discuss the key elements of Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic learning styles.
            2. Identify individual learning style through learning style inventory.
            3. Describe different instructional techniques that address the needs of all learning styles.
